Shakti vs Django¶
Django and Shakti share a philosophy — batteries included, an admin panel, an ORM — but they were built two decades apart with different primary use cases in mind. This is a structural comparison, not a benchmark; neither framework's performance numbers are published here.
Django: mature, sync-first, full-stack¶
Django has been in production for over 15 years. Its ORM, admin panel, template engine, forms system, and ecosystem of third-party packages are extensively battle-tested. Async support exists in modern Django (async views, and growing async ORM support), but Django's core was designed sync-first and async has been added incrementally rather than being the foundation.
Django is also a full-stack framework: it includes a server-rendered template engine for building traditional multi-page websites, not just APIs. If you're building a content-heavy site with server-rendered HTML pages, Django's templating and forms system is more complete than anything Shakti offers.
Shakti: async-native, API and AI-first¶
Shakti was built ASGI-first — there's no sync core with async bolted on. Every handler, every database call, every AI request is async by default:
@app.get("/posts/{id:int}")
async def get_post(id: int, repo: Repository = Depends(_posts)) -> dict:
post = await repo.get_or_404(id)
return post.to_dict()
Shakti is also JSON-API-first, not a full-stack templating framework — there's no server-rendered HTML template engine built in. If your project is an API, a set of AI agents, or a backend for a separate frontend (React, mobile, etc.), that's exactly the shape Shakti is built for. If you need Django's server-rendered template/forms system, Django covers ground Shakti doesn't.
Admin panel: both have one, differently mature¶
Django's admin is famously good, and it's had 15+ years of polish. Shakti's admin panel is newer — register a model and get a dark/light-mode CRUD UI with search, CSV export, and an activity log — but it doesn't yet have Django admin's depth of customization (custom widgets, inline formsets, and so on). If you need that level of admin customization today, Django's admin is more mature.
Where Shakti is different by design¶
- AI is first-class — chat, streaming, RAG, and tool-calling agents ship with the framework. See AI Overview. Django has no equivalent built in.
- Async ORM from the start — no sync-to-async migration path to think about. See Database.
- Smaller surface area — Shakti is a single, focused package rather than a large ecosystem of Django-specific packages to evaluate and integrate.
Which one fits¶
If you're building a traditional server-rendered site, or need Django admin's deep customization, Django's maturity is hard to beat. If you're building an async-first API or an AI-powered backend and want authentication, an ORM, and an admin UI without assembling a separate stack for async support, Shakti is built for that gap.
